Zhenshan Village

Stone fortress holds ancient charm, Han and Buyi as one family.

Zhenshan Village is a Ming Dynasty “stone fortress” Buyi settlement near Guiyang. Founded during the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty, legend holds that General Li Renyu was ordered to garrison troops here. He intermarried with the Buyei Ban clan, establishing a unique history of cohabitation between Han and Buyei peoples. The village's defining feature is its “stone” character: walls, alleys, dwellings, and even roof tiles are almost entirely constructed from layered bluestone slabs, resembling a stone museum emerging from the landscape.

Nestled between mountains and water, the village divides into Upper and Lower Settlements. The Upper Settlement preserves the ancient garrison district, where fortress walls and stone gates remain intact, while its traditional courtyard dwellings exude timeless charm. The Lower Settlement's residences cascade down the hillside in terraced formations, facing Huaxi Reservoir with expansive vistas. Traditional festivals like the “Jumping Festival” on the tenth day of the first lunar month and the “Song-Singing Festival” on the sixth day of the sixth lunar month are still celebrated here. Today, the ancient stone houses attract numerous artists who have transformed them into studios, tea houses, and guesthouses, breathing new artistic vitality into these historic spaces.
