Yan Ying Village

An ancient village nestled in a deep gorge, towering camphor trees reflecting Miao years.

Yan Ying Village is an authentic Miao settlement hidden within a gorge in Dan Zhai County. In the Miao language, “Bie Dong” means “the hillside where eagles dwell.” Its most distinctive feature is the 4-kilometer-long Jia Yan Grand Canyon, with towering cliffs and a deep, secluded stream. Within the village, over a hundred ancient golden thread camphor trees thrive, averaging 150 years old. These ancient trees coexist with the Miao stilt houses, with some dwellings even using the trees as pillars—a vivid embodiment of the ancient wisdom of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.

As a Miao settlement, the area brims with ethnic charm. The grandest celebrations occur during the Miao New Year in the ninth lunar month and the Drum-Turning Festival the following year. Villagers honor ancestors, sing ancient ballads, and dance to the rhythm of the Lusheng reed pipe. The aroma of glutinous rice wafts from hearths, immersing visitors in the authentic, unspoiled life of the Miao people.
