Tucheng Ancient Town

Scenic Area Introduction

Tucheng Ancient Town is located in the western part of Xishui County, Zunyi City, Guizhou Province, along the banks of the Chishui River. It has a unique landscape where “the town clings to the mountains, and the water winds around it.”

Its history dates back to the Han Dynasty, and it was named Tucheng after the discovery of extensive earthen city wall foundations during the late Yuan and early Ming periods.

Since ancient times, it has been a vital port and commercial hub for the “Chuan Salt into Guizhou” trade route. It is now officially a National AAAA Tourist Attraction, a Chinese Historical and Cultural Town, and part of the Chishui River Valley National Tourism Resort.

Tucheng is famous for its important revolutionary history and is known as the “Ruby on the Long March Route” and the “Pearl on the Red Ribbon of the Earth.”

The town's identity is shaped by its “red heritage” and “ancient charm.”

It is the birthplace of the Four Crossings of the Chishui River campaign and has the most revolutionary cultural sites of any place in China, including the Four Crossings of the Chishui River Memorial Hall (a national first-class museum), the China Women's Red Army Memorial Hall (the nation's only such memorial), and the Qinggangpo Battle Site, among many other memorials and relics. The town's long tradition of merchant culture led to the “Eighteen Guilds” tradition, and the histories of guilds like the Salt Guild and the Boatmen Guild are still very much present in the town's streets and alleys.

When you walk along the old cobblestone streets, you can see well-preserved historic buildings and simple lifestyles, which together tell the deep history of this very old town.
