Maotai Town
Scenic Area Introduction
Maotai Town, nestled along the rugged banks of the Chishui River in northern Guizhou Province, China, is far more than just the birthplace of the world-renowned liquor “Maotai.” This ancient town, steeped in the aroma of liquor for millennia, traces its history back to the prosperous Qing Dynasty trade route “Chuan Salt Entering Guizhou.” The thriving scene of “Qin merchants gathering in Maotai” during that era established its status as a commercial and cultural hub. The name “Maotai” itself originates from ancient sacrificial rites performed by the Pu people ancestors on a thatched altar, symbolizing profound reverence for nature and tradition. The unique river valley topography, climate, and microbial environment form an irreplicable ecological system for Maotai liquor production. Since the “Jisheng Distillery” era in the early 18th century, it has been renowned for its exquisite “Hui Sha” fermentation technique. This intricate process—comprising “qu-making during Dragon Boat Festival and sand-layering during Double Ninth Festival,” followed by nine steaming cycles, eight fermentations, and seven distillations—has been designated a National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
This site also bears witness to pivotal moments in modern Chinese history. In 1935, the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army strategically evaded pursuit by crossing the Chishui River three times during the Long March. Today, visitors can reflect on the past at the Maotai Ferry Monument, the Red Army Bridge, and the Four Crossings of the Chishui River Memorial Tower. Alternatively, the Red Army Long March Through Maotai Exhibition Hall offers a modern showcase of that epic era. Here, the weight of history blends with the rich aroma of fine liquor.
Now a national 4A-level tourist attraction, Maotai Town provides an immersive cultural experience. Climb the observation deck at the Heavenly Brew Scenic Area to take in panoramic views of the ancient town and the undulating rooftops of its distilleries. Witness a large-scale performance blending technology and artistry to narrate the philosophy of winemaking. Systematically explore China's liquor history across the seven exhibition halls of the Chinese Liquor Culture City, then stroll along Willow Bay Street, sipping authentic soy-aroma liquor in quaint, traditional shops. The air perpetually carries the subtle fragrance of fermenting grain, while the murmuring waters of the Chishui River and the layered architecture of northern Guizhou beckon you to step into this legendary land, savoring its past and present.
