Loushan Pass

Scenic Area Introduction

Lou Mountain Pass, towering in the central section of the Da Lou Mountain Range in Zunyi, Guizhou, China, stands at an elevation of 1,576 meters. This formidable pass, hailed as the “Throat of Northern Guizhou,” has long been a strategic stronghold where “one man can hold the pass against ten thousand.” It gained worldwide fame for the decisive “Great Victory at Lou Mountain Pass” during the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army's Long March. Today, it has transformed from a battlefield shrouded in gunpowder smoke into a tourist destination where natural scenery and profound history blend seamlessly.

The Battle of Lou Mountain Pass in 1935 marked one of the pivotal turning points in the Red Army's Long March. Chairman Mao Zedong penned the renowned poem “Recalling the Qin Maiden: Lou Shan Pass” in tribute, with its stirring lines—“The mighty pass stretches like iron, yet now we stride forward to cross it anew”—still etched on a monumental stone tablet at the pass, inspiring every visitor. To recreate this heroic chapter, the scenic area has produced the large-scale live performance “The Great Victory at Lou Shan Pass.” The performance employs hundreds of authentic firearms and artillery props, featuring extensive participation from local residents. The echoes of gunfire and battle cries reverberating through the valleys create an intensely immersive experience.

Today's Lou Mountain Pass offers far more than a historical retrospective. Inspired by Mao Zedong's poem, the scenic area has meticulously crafted the “Ten Scenic Views of Lou Mountain.” Visitors can hike the Hundred-Foot Staircase, traverse the thrilling Sky Bridge, and ascend the West Wind Terrace observation deck to take in the breathtaking vistas of layered peaks and ridges. Technology enhances the tangible sense of history: at the Battle Site Exhibition Hall, VR and AR devices immerse visitors in the battle scenes of that era.
