Wanfeng Lake

Scenic Area Introduction

Nestled amidst the rolling peaks where Yunnan, Guangxi, and Guizhou provinces converge in southwest Guizhou lies a vast and magnificent expanse of water—Wanfeng Lake. Formed by the construction of the Tianxianqiao Hydropower Station, this artificial lake spans approximately 176 square kilometers, equivalent to two Erhai Lakes in Dali. Hailed as “the lake of myriad peaks, the finest in the southwest, a landscape painting,” it shines as a dazzling pearl on the Yungui Plateau. For travelers from afar, this national scenic area offers a unique destination where one can simultaneously experience China's karst geological wonders, diverse ethnic cultures, and distinctive leisure experiences.

The charm of Wanfeng Lake lies in its majestic “mountains embracing waters” scenery. Surrounded by tens of thousands of verdant karst peaks, it creates the extraordinary landscape of “water within mountains, mountains within water.” Scattered across the lake are dozens of islands and peninsulas, along with hundreds of tranquil coves. Each step reveals a new vista, unfolding like a scroll painting of mountains and waters. A boat tour offers the ultimate way to experience its grandeur. Setting sail from Hongchun Pier, you glide through crystal-clear waters, passing cone-shaped peaks that resemble stone forests on the lake's surface. In the distance, the dreamlike Gothic structure of Kilong Castle rises from the lake's center. Resembling a fairy-tale fortress, it adds a touch of exotic romance to this Eastern landscape painting. On clear days, the lake's visibility exceeds 2 meters. As light and shadow shift throughout the day, the lake surface transforms into ever-changing vistas, earning it the reputation of “three distinct views in a single day.”

Beyond natural scenery, Wanfeng Lake is renowned for its rich cultural experiences and sporting activities. Ethnic minorities like the Buyi people reside along the lakeshore, enriching the journey with their distinctive dwellings, attire, and love songs that add a profound cultural dimension. During festivals like the “March Third” celebration each lunar year, grand mountain song festivals and other events are held along the lakeshore. People from all ethnic groups gather together, creating an incredibly lively atmosphere.
