Leigong Mountain National Forest Park

Scenic Area Introduction

As the morning mist begins to lift, ascending along the ancient trail from Leigong Mountain's North Gate leads you into a pristine oasis at 27° north latitude. This national forest park and nature reserve, spanning over 4,354 hectares, features a main peak reaching 2,178.8 meters—the highest summit in the Miao Mountains. UNESCO has hailed it as “one of the most pristine, unspoiled ecological and cultural sanctuaries preserved by humankind today.” During the ascent, vegetation transitions from broadleaf forests to alpine mosses, embodying the phenomenon of “four seasons on one mountain.” When sea of clouds billows, the peaks resemble islands, while the summit often displays the mystical “Buddha's Light” phenomenon during summer and autumn.

The park serves as a gene bank for rare flora and fauna. Visitors may explore China's largest natural stand of “living fossil” bald cypress trees or encounter creatures like macaques and white peacocks. The three-tiered Xiangshuiyan Waterfall cascades 110 meters down the mountainside, its roar echoing through the valley. Deep within the forest, millennia-old trees coexist with mosses and orchids, teeming with vitality.

Leigong Mountain is not only a natural wonderland but also a gateway to Miao culture. Over a hundred Miao villages dot the park's surroundings. Take Wudong Miao Village, nestled halfway up the mountain, where streams meander through the settlement and stilt houses blend seamlessly with nature. Here, you can immerse yourself in authentic Miao life. The air here is exceptionally pure, rich in negative oxygen ions, making it ideal for hiking, watching sea-of-clouds sunrises, and photography. We recommend setting aside a full day to deeply experience the purity and mystery of this “one of the world's top ten forest tourism destinations,” from its natural wonders to its cultural villages.
