Zangkejiang Scenic Area

Scenic Area Introduction

Zangke River Scenic Area, a nationally certified 4A-level tourist destination, is located in Liuzhi Special District, Liupanshui City, Guizhou Province. Its name originates from the classic record in Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian during the Western Han Dynasty: “Yelang borders the Zangke River.” It is widely regarded as the birthplace of the mysterious ancient Yelang civilization. Spanning 259 square kilometers, the scenic area's most striking feature is its dramatic elevation drop—rising from 745 meters at the river surface to 2,127 meters at Laowang Mountain Peak. This 1,382-meter vertical ascent has sculpted awe-inspiring karst landscapes like the Chibi Gorge, renowned for its majestic and precipitous formations.

Here, profound history seamlessly blends with vibrant local culture. Visitors can uncover the mysteries of the ancient kingdom at the “Fudi Yelang Culture Exhibition Center” and immerse themselves in the simple, rich ethnic traditions of the Buyi people by exploring riverside villages like Muchen Village, where “every household brews wine and boils sugar.” Most uniquely, the Zangke River has evolved into an internationally renowned outdoor sports paradise. Leveraging its exceptional natural conditions, the area hosts a National Ecological Multi-Gradient Outdoor Sports Base, annually staging major events like international paragliding competitions and national kayaking championships. You can soar from cliffs with over 1,250 meters of vertical drop, paddle through crystal-clear river waters, or conquer Laowang Mountain—reaching its summit to command panoramic views of sea-of-clouds vistas and river gorges.

Thus, the Zangke River offers far more than mere sightseeing. It is a comprehensive tourism resort integrating the spiritual essence of mountains and waters, millennia of ancient kingdom culture, vibrant ethnic traditions, and a three-dimensional extreme sports experience encompassing water, land, and air. The area enjoys a subtropical temperate climate with mild winters and cool summers. Accommodations include scenic hotels like “Clouds Above Zangke” and distinctive homestays, making it an ideal destination for travelers seeking deep cultural immersion and outdoor adventure.
