Wenchang Pavilion
Scenic Area Introduction
Welcome to the cultural heart of Guiyang—Wenchang Pavilion. Perched atop the Old East Gate Moon City, it stands not only as a national treasure but also as a unique window into ancient Chinese architectural wisdom and local cultural heritage.
Its most astonishing feature is its nationally unparalleled three-tiered, three-eaved, asymmetrical nine-cornered pyramidal wooden structure. Upon closer inspection, you'll notice that the number of beams, columns, and rafters all adhere to the number “nine” or multiples thereof (e.g., 54 columns, 81 beams). This is no coincidence. In traditional Chinese culture and the I Ching, “nine” is the supreme yang number, symbolizing heaven, imperial authority, and perfection. It embodies the builders' profound wish for flourishing literary fortune. Since its construction in 1596, this approximately 20-meter-tall structure has weathered over four centuries, silently chronicling Guiyang's history.
Climb to the pavilion's summit for panoramic city views. Once dedicated to Wenchang Emperor, the patron deity of literary fortune, it echoes with the reverent gazes of scholars who prayed here for academic success—a gaze that now converges with modern visitors' contemplation of history. Today, the surrounding area has been designated a provincial-level historical and cultural district. Explore nearby old streets like Radio Street and Minsheng Road, savoring authentic local cuisine to experience the vibrant, everyday life of Guiyang.
