Hongfeng Lake

Scenic Area Introduction

Hongfeng Lake, hailed as the “Pearl of the Plateau,” is a national scenic area and AAAA-level tourist destination located in Guizhou Province, China. Conveniently situated in the western suburbs of the provincial capital Guiyang, it serves as an ideal starting point for exploring Guizhou's western golden tourist route. Its poetic name originates from the breathtaking scenery in late autumn, when the lakeside hills are blanketed in fiery red maple leaves that contrast vividly with the azure waters.

This vast lake spans 57.2 square kilometers, dotted with 178 islands of varying sizes, resembling scattered stars. It perfectly showcases the fantastical karst landscape, forming the marvelous scenery of “mountains within lakes, islands within lakes, caves within islands, and lakes within caves,” renowned as the “Four Wonders of Red Maple.” Cruising through the lake, you'll not only admire the picturesque canyons reminiscent of the “Little Three Gorges” but also explore boat-accessible caves like “General's Cave,” marveling at the dazzling stalactite waterfalls within.

Beyond natural wonders, Hongfeng Lake brims with vibrant ethnic culture. Gaze upon the drum tower built entirely of cypress wood, or stroll across the wind-and-rain bridge—a shelter from the elements—to appreciate unique architectural ingenuity.

Boating on the lake and island exploration are classic experiences. Autumn (especially from November to early December) is the prime season to witness the forests ablaze with color. Please also note that Hongfeng Lake serves as a vital drinking water source for Guiyang City. Preserving the lake's clarity and purity during your visit will make your journey even more meaningful.
