Jiuzhou Ancient Town

Scenic Area Introduction

Jiuzhou Ancient Town, a “living ancient town” with over 600 years of history. It is not only one of Guizhou's ten most renowned ancient towns but also the cultural root of Anshun, with the saying “Jiuzhou came first, then Anshun.” Since the Yuan Dynasty, it has served as the administrative seat of Anshun Prefecture. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, it functioned as a crucial military outpost and commercial hub known as the “Gateway between Yunnan and Guizhou.” To this day, it preserves its original Ming and Qing architectural layout centered around four main streets.

Wandering through cobblestone alleys, the distinctive Tunpu culture comes alive. The town's architecture blends Jianghuai-Hui style with Guizhou stone-house characteristics, featuring ornate gatehouses and carved window lattices that exude timeless elegance. Local residents continue ancient traditions like earth opera and Tunpu dialect, infusing the town with vibrant local life. Deep cultural-tourism integration enriches the experience: visitors can personally engage with intangible heritage crafts like Anshun wood carving, batik, and traditional papermaking, or immerse themselves in the rhythmic gongs and drums of “Tunpu Earth Opera,” evoking the spirit of the Ming Dynasty.

As the “culinary capital of central Guizhou,” must-try local delicacies include Jiuzhou Chicken Chili, Jiuzhou Small-Pot Tea, and the Tunpu Eight Great Bowls.
