Gaodang Buyi Village

Scenic Area Introduction

Nestled amidst the karst peaks of Anshun, Guizhou, Gaodang Ancient Village clings to the mountainside as the murmuring Suoluo River winds through its lanes. This tranquil settlement, boasting over 600 years of history, is hailed as a “living fossil of Buyi architecture.”

The ancient settlement preserves a cluster of stone-and-wood stilted houses dating from 200 to 600 years ago. These structures fully maintain the traditional Buyi layout of “one central hall flanked by two wings.” Walking through the crisscrossing stone alleys feels like stepping into a stone-carved epic.

Life here blends history with the present. Villagers still uphold ancient customs like weaving, batik dyeing, and singing duets. The “Sheep-Seeking Well,” originating from a Ming Dynasty shepherd legend, and the ancient Suoluo River Bridge, witness to the Tea-Horse Road, silently narrate the past. During festivals, the vibrant Buyei wedding banquet performances, dazzling iron flower displays, and lively bonfire gatherings breathe new life into the ancient village.

Today, Gaodang Ancient Village is not only a national AAAA-level tourist attraction but also seamlessly integrates profound Buyei culture with modern tourism through initiatives like converting old houses into unique homestays and establishing batik workshops. It stands as a living museum, where every stone slab bears the etched memories of a people, awaiting visitors to uncover the nostalgia that spans millennia.
