Zhijin Grand Canyon

Scenic Area Introduction

Adjacent to the “King of Chinese Karst Caves”—Zhijin Cave—Zhijin Grand Canyon forms part of the core landscape zone within the Zhijin Cave World Geopark. Together, they create a remarkable karst wonderland that integrates above-ground and underground features. This 3-kilometer-long gorge is renowned for its dramatic “one ridge, three valleys” topography. Within its compact expanse, it densely features canyons, sinkholes, dolines, underground rivers, and a cluster of nine consecutive natural bridges. International geomorphologist Williams hailed it as “a world-class karst landscape.”

The canyon offers an exceptionally immersive experience. You can walk along cliffside walkways, gazing up at a hundred-meter-high dome; navigate underground rivers by boat, touching the textures of time etched on rock walls; or ride the 108-meter-tall “Golden Valley Sky Ladder” vertical sightseeing elevator, taking in panoramic views during its rapid ascent and descent. This multifaceted exploration—water upon water, cave upon cave, bridge upon bridge, sky beyond sky—ensures every turn brings fresh wonder.

From March to May each year, the gorge hosts a breathtaking ecological spectacle—the “Return of Ten Thousand Swallows.” At dusk, tens of thousands of swallows return with a roar, weaving a dynamic tapestry of life above the gorge's skylight, creating a truly magnificent scene.
