Mu'ege Ancient City
Scenic Area Introduction
Mu'ege Ancient City, meaning “Royal City at the Foot of Heaven” in the Yi language, was first established during the Shu Han period. It served as the capital of the ancient Luodian Kingdom and the seat of the Ming Dynasty's Guizhou Xuanwei Prefecture. The Shuixi Yi ethnic group's political regime, spanning seven dynasties and over a thousand years, operated from this location. During the Ming Dynasty, the Yi female stateswoman Lady Shexiang governed here, establishing the Longchang Nine Post Stations to actively promote Han-Yi cultural integration. Reconstructed after 2008 according to historical blueprints, the ancient city is now a National 4A-level Tourist Attraction. It fully preserves nationally protected cultural relics such as the Shexiang Tomb and Shexiang Museum, earning its reputation as “Shexiang's Hometown and Sacred Land of Ancient Yi.”
The reconstructed city centers on the Guizhou Provincial Administrative Office as its core architectural complex, blending Han-style palace architecture with Yi totemic elements. The Shexiang Museum houses over 1,400 precious artifacts, systematically showcasing Yi history and culture. Additionally, attractions within the ancient city include the Douma Pavilion and Ethnic Culture Street. Regular events such as the Yi Torch Festival and song-and-dance performances offer a window into the living heritage of ancient Yi civilization.
