Pingtang Grand Bridge
A Diamond-Like Sky Bridge in the Clouds.
Introduction
Nestled in the Caodu River Gorge of Pingtang, Qiannan, the Pingtang Grand Bridge stands as a triple-tower, double-cable-plane composite-beam cable-stayed bridge. Spanning 2,135 meters with a main span of 550 meters, its 332-meter-tall concrete towers—the world's tallest—feature a diamond-shaped spatial structure and a blue-and-white color scheme, resembling three jewels set among the karst peaks. Constructors overcame challenges like fierce canyon winds and fractured geology, pioneering multiple construction techniques. The project swept top international and domestic awards including the Luban Prize and the Gustav Lindenthal Prize, reducing travel time from Pingtao to Luodian from 2.5 hours to just 1 hour. It stands as a super-engineering feat blending technical prowess with aesthetic excellence.
This bridge pioneers an integrated “bridge + service area + scenic spot” model. Its Sky Bridge Service Area, a national 3A-rated tourist attraction, features cliffside viewing hotels, a bridge museum, and car camping grounds. From its observation deck, visitors can gaze upon the “Chinese Sky Eye” 30 kilometers away. At night, the bridge's lights intertwine with the starry sky, creating a viral photo spot. It connects tourism resources including the Sky Eye science popularization center, Buyi ethnic villages, and karst ecosystems, transforming a transportation artery into an immersive destination offering diverse experiences: cloud-level vistas, science education, and leisure vacations.
Amidst the layered karst landscapes, the Pingtao Grand Bridge serves not only as a vital artery connecting Yunnan, Guizhou, and Guangxi but also as a prosperity bridge spanning natural barriers and a scenic bridge linking nature and culture. Through the integration of culture and tourism, it writes a new chapter where “the bridge itself is the scenery.” Every traveler passing through can, while speeding through the clouds, understand the mutual pursuit of Guizhou's landscapes and engineering marvels, and feel the profound fusion of natural grandeur and human ingenuity.
